And the winner is...

So I finished designing the new jewelry collection and on Thursday we shot the new catalog, but before all other things I wanted to notify you regarding the winner of the competition in which one reader will receive a jewelry piece designed according to their idea and named after them. So I would like to introduce you Efrat earrings and Necklace!
Lovely Efrat wrote that for many years now she is very fond of hummingbirds and dreams of wearing hummingbird earrings on her wedding day. I liked the way she described the jewelry and the story behind it and that's why I chose her idea.
Apart from the pair of earrings I designed a necklace with the same hummingbird element and two Gladiolus flowers.
I hope you will like these pieces as well as the rest of the collection which will be revealed later this week.

Eames

I first got to know Charles and Ray Eames during my first year of Design school. Each couple of students was given a name of a famous designer and was required to create a tribute to his work. My friend Roni and I received the Eames, a couple of American designers who worked during the period following World War II and became known especially thanks to their contribution to the development of the mass-production and practical approach in the field of design. This approach seems trivial today, in the age of Ikea, but back in those days it was conceived as revolutionary.

Charles and Ray Eams

Our tribute to them was creating a small model of their office which expresses more than anything their rich world and their love for design, that started with creating orthopedic molds for the army and continued especially in the field of furniture, but also took place in every aspect in their life. With every chair or miniature chest I created I fell more and more in love.

The actual Eames office

Apart from their contribution to the history of design by developing special methods for molding plywood and working with plastic and fiberglass, other things that make Charles and Ray's designs so unique are the lovable shapes and colors they gave their creations. These, apparently, are the result of their work together - Charles, the practical genius and Ray, the color loving artist.
Eames furniture is considered as designs classics, and is continued to be sold today as well, without seeming less up-to-date or relevant.

Eames design

One of the things that makes the Eames my favorite designers is their total and over-all approach to design. They didn't only design furniture, but they also planned and designed their own home, created graphic works and prints, designed numerous toys and machines and even directed and produced short films.
For years a fantasized about an Eames rocking chair named RAR, which consists of a plastic seat over a metal base with wooden rockers. Due to it's high price tag it remained a dream for years the closest I got to the chair was when I went to "visit" it at the store. For my last birthday, a few of my friends and family joined and bought me the lovely chair, in a pretty blue. Since then, I am excited to see it every time I enter my house.

My blue RAR

Apart from this chair, one of my favorite items is the Hose of Cards, a game which consists of playing card with slots cut into them, which enable you to build all sorts of forms with them. The cards are decorated with beautiful images from everyday life: colored pencils, spools of sewing string, dolls etc. I once read the Charles said that they chose these images in order to emphasize the beauty in everyday things around us. When I moved in to my studio a year ago I framed some of the cards and hang them next to my desk. They remind me that beauty is all around me and I only need to look for it. For me, there is no greater inspiration.

House of Cards

Eames furniture is sold world wide by Vitra, but if you happen to visit MoMA in New York make sure to go up to the part which is dedicated to design and see many of their creations on exhibition.

The jewelry piece of your dreams

These days I'm working on my new jewelry collection which will come out in a few weeks. These are long and crazy days - in order to be able to concentrate I work in the evenings and nights, when my studio is empty and quit. Then I am all alone, with a table full of materials and a mind full of thoughts and ideas.
Very often I get to think about you, my wonderful customers.
Will you like the new items? Will you find them interesting? Or maybe too interesting and different?
This is the reason I decided to have you take part in the design proccess of one item. Comment on this post and describe the piece of jewelry you would most like to own, something you dream of but don't have yet. On 11/1 (only a few days away)! I will choose one idea and design a jewelry piece according to it. This item will be manufactured and will be part of the upcoming collection. It will be named after whoever came up with the idea for it, and she of course will receive the item as a gift.
Sounds good? So go ahead and write me about your jewelry (and don't forget to leave your email so I can contact you if your idea is chosen)!

This is Eina necklace, named after Einat, my studio manager.
Will the new piece be named after you?

Berlin

I recently came back from a few days in Berlin. Unlike my last trip, which was purely business, this trip was also about pleasure.
Going to Berlin is something I've been planning for a while, after hearing so many wonderful things about the city. I wasn't disappointed. From the first day it managed to charm me with it's unique style.
If I try to define what sets Berlin aside from other places, I think it's about the unusual mix between the traditional and conservative with the progressive and edgy, between the past which holds much suffering and wars, and a present and future of openness to new ideas. A mix which was created after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when the city woke to a new life and quickly managed to catch up with it's European neighbors.

Berlin is full of magical places, small side streets and inner yards in which you can find small boutiques, coffee shops and galleries. I have already told you about my love for small boutiques, and Berlin isn't missing any. I have chosen to present you a few of my favorites:

Serendipity, Hackesche Hofe- Hof IV

This lovely butique is in a complex called "Hackesche Hofe", in which a series of patios is connected, all filled with small shops and coffee shops. In this shop you will find everything you want but don't need - designed boxes, decorated notebooks, pretty housewares and decorations, some from my favorite French brand Mini Labo, which will get it's own post soon.

Hoo Ka Hey Shop, Kastanienalle 19

Some of the shops are located in what used to be apartments for living. In this shop they decorated the passages with beautiful drawings.

Kauf Dich Glucklich, Kastanienalle 54

What most defines Berlin style is the nostalgic, Retro feel. In many shops there is a mix between old and new and many times even the new items look second hand. The place you see in the pictures above is like heaven for those who are into retro. On the first floor you will find a small coffee shop, which is actually a small Formica kitchen, where they serve waffles with coffee or hot chocolate. You can enjoy them sitting next to one of the Formica tables or in the small yard full of old-school garden furniture. On the second floor there is a cute shop selling new clothing with a vintage chic.

When you'll walk into this shop, you wouldn't know what to get excited about more- the clothing or the funiture and the beautiful vintage decorations. These, by the way, are not for sale (I checked)..

This shop actually is a second hand shop, so all these are actually for sale. Playmobil anyone?

Filippa K, Alte Sconhauser str

When  it comes to contemporary design, Berlin also has a lot to offer. In this great designer's shop you can find chic, refined items. The prices, of course, go accordingly.

In this wonderful shop, the design on the shop manages to overshadow the design of the shoes, which are creative as well.

Oranienburger.

When you get tired from checking out all the shops, I recommend a visit to this wonderful bakery on one of the yard on Oranienburger street.  They make only cookies and the smell in there is indescribable. If you arrive when they are closed, you can always buy some cookies from the cool vending machine outside.

Orchids and Airplanes

I took a small break from writing in the past few weeks, but not without a good reason: I was away on a business trip to southern Asia.
The places where I've been and the beautiful things I've seen are enough to fill a whole blog, but instead I chose to share a different kind of experience with you - a flying experience.
Usually, when you think about flying in an airplane you imagine cramped seats, cranky flight attendants and food that tastes like cardboard.
During this trip, I had the pleasure of flying with Thai Airways, which was easily crowned my favorite airline, much because of the comfy seats and the generous hospitality, but mostly thanks to the company's attention to design. At "Thai", it receives a whole different,  less conservative interpretation than we are used to at other airlines.

It looks like this:
When you enter the aircraft you will be greeted by lovely flight attendants, dressed in impressive traditional clothing in the company's colors- purple and fuchsia pink. Each one of them has an orchid tucked on her dress. The interior is also entirely designed in pink and purple- not a routine choice for an airline, but definitely one that makes you sense the vacation even before it started. The food (which is not less superb) will be served in beautiful dishes in the colors- you guessed it right- pink and purple and on your tray you will also find an orchid. On top of that, the headphones you received in a nice fabric case are a gift to take home.

In the spirit of my trip and the exciting flight, here are some items which combine orchids:

Sunglasses Case by Genie's Crafts
Orchid Zipper Pouch by Jpat Purses

Being one for my favorite flowers, I like to incorporate the orchid motif in many of my designs.

Birds and Branches

One of the motifs I adore mostly in my jewelry collection is that of a bird on a branch.
The idea developed back when I was studying for my degree in industrial design, during one of the classes in which I designed jewelry inspired by electric poles and wires along with a friend. One of the designs I created was a necklace which combined 2 chains that resembled the electric wires and 2 birds that sat on the chains.
I mostly liked the way that the item as a whole piece turned into a "surrounding" that tells a story, and the different elements joined together to create a realistic picture, in smaller dimensions.
As time went by, the electric wires turned into more gentle branches and those too, like the birds, reflected a different character with each design. I like watching my customers selecting their own personal bird - each one with her unique character. Sometimes I can actually guess which bird a customer will choose for herself.
In my latest Summer 2010 Collection, as in prior collections, I incorporated the bird on a branch motif in a few necklaces and in a hair pin that I designed.

1. Bird on branch hair pin
2. A-symmetrical bird on branch necklace
6.Bird on Branch in Blossom Necklace

And here are some more lovely items with birds and branches

2.Mama and baby birdie vase by Cristine Tenenholz
3.Ceramic cup with bird handle by Chris Koen
5.Bird cabinet knobs by Riri Creations
6.Bird jewelry hanger from Red Envelope
7.Letterpress notecard set by Lucky Bee Press

Also, I invite you to watch the beautiful video for 2010 summer collection, created by Gaby Crohn. Enjoy.

Boxes

I love boxes.
I never officially declared that I collect them, but in the past few years I gathered up so many boxes that the only way to call it is a "collection".
In the world we live in today, in which packaging is a temporary thing, thrown away careless, I think there is something magical about a box, that not not only guards our dearest possessions, but also has a life of its own, sometimes more interesting and colorful than of it's content's.
I purchased most of my boxes in small shops and boutiques I discovered while traveling. Shops that were so special that I wanted to buy everything, although nothing was actually of any use for me.
In such a situation, a box seems like an amazingly useful item.
Quote: "What do you mean 'what do you need this for'? It's a box! You can put stuff in it"!
These are some of my favorite boxes.

1. Lunchbox style cardboard trunks from Kate's Paperie in NYC
2. I got this lovely metal box from my sister, who knows exactly what I like
3. These boxes were chewing gum packages. I coated them with colorful paper to give them a new life.
4. This is my jewelry box, and a peek to what's inside it these days. It's a wodden box which I painted a few years ago.

And here are some boxes I wouldn't mind adding to the collection:

1. Pillow boxes from Lilithevy
2. Stationary box owls from Loli crafts
3. Fishermans Tackle Box from Hindsvik
4. Vintage flowered metal file box from Sleepy Owl Vintage
5. Vintage Debutante Lunch Box from The Vintage Wife
6. Metal Box with Eiffel Tower from Felicity and Allen's shop

All things beautiful

I can't recall when I first realized I have a thing for beautiful things.
I mean, I always made sure to arrange my crayons in the right color order, or spent half a class drawing a nice headline instead of copying from the board and even today- I spend twice as long making the greeting card as it took me to choose the gift.
But when did it become the center of my life?
When I was 11 I visited an exhibition in a design academy in Jerusalem. I think it was then that I decided (not knowing it would mean 4 years with no sleep) to study design.
As a teenager I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer and drove the bus to the big city once a week for a sewing class. But when it was actually time to decide, I found myself on the way to the faculty of  Architecture. In the last minute I changed my mind and ended up studying Industrial design, not before I spent a year studying interior design. But it's not over, because...
Eventually, after graduating, I realized that my true passion is for jewelry and accessories, and established my own line.
Even today, I still don't know what I want to become when I grow up. The thing is, that today- I know it doesn't really matter.
I just know that I love beautiful things.
This blog is the place to present all the things that I love- The things which enrich my world and inspire my work. It will include design, fashion, art and even some architecture. So if you also love beautiful things- this is the place for you.
